Ali Magomedov

Ali Magomedov chose BJJ over university, founded Moscow’s 187 BJJ and developed from a European purple-belt champion into a teacher.

Biography

Ali Magomedov’s first sporting interest was football. Raised in Makhachkala, he discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2011 at Moscow’s Lion academy under Leonid Gatovskiy. Although he spent periods training in America, his Russian biography describes a continuous relationship with Gatovskiy: he received his belts from the same teacher back in Russia. Choosing jiu-jitsu meant leaving university. In his February 2016 BJJ Eastern Europe interview, Magomedov recalled that his father initially disagreed with the decision but nevertheless helped pay for travel and competition. His father’s eventual acceptance lifted pressure from him. He also described Gatovskiy as a mentor and friend, someone whose contribution extended beyond techniques. Magomedov had been teaching at Lion Baza since 2013. By 2016, he was often the only brown belt training among lower-ranked partners, following a weekday routine of gi sessions built around warming up and sparring. Competition brought a different kind of pressure. Recalling the 2015 Europeans, he said he had feared losing before each match, only to settle once he touched his opponent’s gi and the exchanges began. He won the adult purple-belt middleweight category. Looking ahead in 2016, he hoped his pupils would establish academies too, contributing to a larger Russian BJJ community. Gatovskiy awarded him his black belt in 2017, and Magomedov founded 187 BJJ the following year. That June, he accepted a short-notice match against Bruno Frazatto at ACBJJ 14 in Moscow, with his students among those supporting him in the venue. Graciemag’s contemporary report described Magomedov pulling guard, using the lapel to reverse position and finishing with a foot lock. The victory joined his European purple-belt title as a distinct moment in his competition career. Teaching became the part of jiu-jitsu he most enjoyed. In the Russian portrait, Magomedov described placing increasing emphasis on passing his knowledge to students. His academy now lists him as its head coach and records his second degree, awarded by Arbi Muradov in 2023. His current work includes 187 BJJ’s separate junior group for thirteen-to-seventeen-year-olds. The programme adjusts tasks to age and experience, with attention to understanding exchanges and working with a partner. The coaching roster also includes Evgeniy Kirichuk, a purple belt under Magomedov who teaches beginners.
