Alex Sierra Minduin

Alex Sierra Minduin's BJJ story links study with Jorge Medeiros and Fabricio Werdum to teaching across Spain.

Biography

Alex Sierra Minduin teaches jiu-jitsu at Checkmat Madrid. An October 2026 profile in 20minutos identified him as Héctor Muriel's coach and one of the young competitor's role models. His own learning crossed two cities. Brasa Madrid's February 2008 introduction traced it from Jorge Medeiros in Rio de Janeiro to Fabricio Werdum in Madrid. It described Sierra, then a brown belt, as having more than ten years of practice and over five of teaching. According to that club account, he taught classes and seminars in Madrid, Vitoria and other Spanish cities, with more than sixty practitioners spread across the country. The introduction marked a new phase representing Brasa Spain under Cicero Rocha's supervision. A contemporary class report gives a closer view of his teaching. Visiting TNT, Team No Team, at Madrid's Kiofu gym in October 2007, Kenneth Gautier Cerrutti described progressive Gimnasia Natural exercises for seated or hook guard: positions using the legs to manage an opponent from below. That month Sierra and Vicente Tamayo also signed an organizers' message for Hummer Man Fight 2. Their announced aim was to give Spanish and Spain-based MMA fighters opportunities against internationally established opponents, as a step towards larger events. By August 2010, Kairos Krav Maga was welcoming Sierra and his group to Escuela 360º. Its announcement described him as a black-belt BJJ instructor and Checkmat's Madrid representative, and offered jiu-jitsu alongside the school's Krav Maga program. Checkmat Madrid's older official teaching-location page also names him as its black-belt instructor, listing Club Deportivo Esquerdo and KravMaga 360 as venues. His teaching also brought groundwork to practitioners of other systems. On 10 February 2018 he taught a three-hour seminar for Krav Maga 01 Madrid, accompanied by Daniel Mármol. The hosts described a lesson that began with ways to take an opponent down, continued with stabilizing positions and moving between them, and ended with straightforward submissions, holds that force a partner to concede. They praised the instructors' explanations and the help given to participants. The standing and ground phases were taught as parts of a connected sequence. In May 2019, Checkmat Madrid announced plans to open a remodeled space at Esteban Collantes 32 on 3 June. It described a 140-square-meter mat without columns and a children's area intended to let parents attend training. The written introduction to his May 2020 GRIPS&MICS appearance described his route from training with Werdum to Checkmat with his teacher Leo Vieira. It presented him as Checkmat Madrid's head, using the name Alexandre Sierra do Nascimento. Checkmat Madrid's published adult curriculum explains how its classes are intended to work. BJJ-specific warm-ups and repeated movements lead into technical explanations of positions, grips, controls and alternatives. Students then practice the positions with changing partners offering moderated resistance, before moving to sparring, or live practice. The basic program covers self-defense and standing and ground fundamentals; advanced classes explore more detailed applications. His pupils include people who teach elsewhere. Ondovilla Fight Club in San Vicente del Raspeig identifies him as Iñaki's teacher and the person responsible for Checkmat Madrid. It describes that relationship as its connection to Checkmat's technical program. Daniel Villamor's Irimi Madrid biography likewise describes continued study of jiu-jitsu and grappling with Sierra. It distinguishes that training from Villamor's judo studies with José Alberto Pérez, showing separate teachers for the different disciplines. Canto Martial Arts describes its Checkmat affiliation as directed by Sierra, with supervision from Daniel Mármol. The academy's August 2026 report described another encounter with Vieira: a seminar on 20 June attended by students from white to black belt. The school reported work on technical details alongside his emphasis on technique, training together and careful practice.
