Alan Gumbs

In 2014, Alan Gumbs found room for jiu-jitsu, social life and competitive ambition.

Biography

In May 2014, Alan Gumbs was an Alliance Puerto Azul blue belt with two years of BJJ experience. Jiu-jitsu helped him relax and left room for his social life; he felt he lost nothing by avoiding alcohol and cigarettes. He appreciated Fawel Abramowicz's patient explanations of movements. Gumbs wanted a Pan-American title and more medals for his academy. El Telégrafo reported Miami Open division gold and a place in its open-weight final. On 27 September 2014 he represented Alliance at The Cage Tournament in Guayaquil. Under its submission-only rules, competitors had twenty minutes to force an opponent to give up; otherwise the bout was a draw, without points deciding a winner. Giovanny Arroyo of Predador beat Gumbs in about a minute.
