Ahmed Talal Makki

Ahmed Talal Makki built teams and competition opportunities in Jeddah before ending his professional MMA career with a submission win at home.

Biography

Ahmed Talal Makki’s martial-arts career began with sanda, Chinese kickboxing, in 1999. His route into mixed martial arts opened in 2006 when a professional fighter in Jeddah needed a training partner. Recounting his career to Asharq Al-Awsat in May 2025, Makki described the limited support and facilities available when he and Mohammad Al-Najjar formed Spider Team in 2008. He began coaching in 2010 and later established a martial-arts academy. In 2012, he travelled to the United States to develop his skills at Black House and Kings MMA, working under Rafael Cordeiro. His professional MMA career began in 2014. Grappling also became part of his competition record: representing Alliance, he won the male Master 1 purple-belt lightweight division at the 2016 European IBJJF No-Gi Championship. No-gi competition removes the jacket and its grips. His later account recalled making that European campaign without an accompanying coach or support team. Makki and Najjar also worked on opportunities for others to compete. They founded Saudi Fighting Championship, whose opening amateur show took place at Sports Tech Gym in Jeddah on 17 February 2017. The founders said they wanted to build towards professional bouts and bring international fighters onto future cards. Makki’s 2025 profile reported that he personally financed the amateur championship for two years, providing opportunities for Saudi fighters including Abdullah Al-Qahtani. For his own farewell, Makki chose Jeddah so he could perform in front of his community. Before the fight, he admitted feeling nervous: many of his followers had never watched him compete. On 9 May 2025, he faced Hasham Elnamer in a PFL MENA lightweight showcase bout. PFL identified Makki as a BJJ black belt, and its written account described takedowns and ground control in the second round, followed by further submission attempts in the third. He finished with a leg lock at 2:03 of that final round. Afterwards, Makki told Arab News that the home crowd’s response had exceeded what he imagined. He wanted the farewell to recognise the people who had supported him. Retirement from professional fighting, he explained, would leave room for mentoring younger athletes and developing MMA projects in Saudi Arabia. He also planned to expand his media work through behind-the-scenes material, fight analysis and commentary.
