Ahmed Elwany

Ahmed Elwany co-founded Team Elwany in Erbil, bringing lessons from New York to local classes, competition teams and free youth seminars.

Biography

Ahmed Elwany was still a blue belt when he and his brother Al-Hakam opened Team Elwany in Erbil in September 2020. According to the academy’s own account, just one student attended the first class. Elwany explained his reason for building the school in personal terms: jiu-jitsu had changed his life, and he wanted people of different ages, religions and nationalities to have access to it. His training had begun abroad, at UMA Academy in Ukraine in 2014. Two years later, he received his blue belt from Roberto “Cyborg” at Anubis Martial Arts Academy in Egypt. He then returned to Erbil, where the brothers established their school with a direct affiliation to the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York. In 2023, Rafael Costa awarded him his purple belt at the New York headquarters. Travelling to learn remained part of his work as a teacher. The academy describes visits to New York roughly every five months, generally lasting about six weeks, followed by bringing the material home. One dated account makes that exchange concrete: in May 2025, Elwany returned from a month training under Costa with spider-guard material to introduce to his classes in Erbil. As head coach, he leads the intermediate programme, connecting foundational positions into sequences of attacks and submissions, then adding guards and counters. His no-gi sessions remove the jacket and its grips, combining takedowns, wrestling and submissions. He also shares responsibility for the eight-to-fourteen-year-old children’s programme with Hiba Elwany, Stefanos Kostikidis and Ahmed Saradar. The school describes a room shared by Kurdish locals, Arab Iraqis, expatriates and members of the oil and diplomatic communities. Classes run in English, with Arabic or Kurdish translation when needed. Its current account estimates around seventy regular trainees and nearly three hundred people who have trained there altogether. Elwany’s coaching also extends to preparation for competition outside Erbil. With assistance from Ali Alabed, he prepared Mohammed Abdulkereem, Rami Daood and Zain Daood for the 2024 AJP Tour event in Jordan. In September 2025, he led a free three-day youth seminar at Team Elwany, bringing together under-sixteen, under-seventeen and under-eighteen athletes from academies across Iraq. The sessions concentrated on transitions, passing an opponent’s guard and sweeps that reverse position from underneath.
