Ahmed A. Alhouli

Ahmed Alhouli developed Arabic-language jiu-jitsu instruction through a bilingual DVD, online tutorials and teaching in Kuwait.

Biography

Ahmed Alhouli’s teaching has connected Brazilian jiu-jitsu with other martial arts and Arabic-language instruction. The Kuwaiti instructor’s 2018 biographical account dates his training in Kuwait and Britain to 1984. A later KUNA report places his establishment of the Kuwaiti jiu-jitsu school in 1999. His 2007 instructional DVD, Eternal Jiu-Jitsu, brought BJJ and Japanese Tai Jutsu together. The catalogue describes a seventy-eight-minute programme offered in English and Arabic. By July 2010, Graciemag was identifying him as a student of Vinicius “Draculino” and leader of Gracie Barra in Kuwait. It also reported his preparations for a tournament scheduled for August 6 in Kuwait City. Arabic teaching continued through tutorials for ArabsMMA. Its 2013 introduction presented Alhouli as a BJJ black belt and Gracie Barra Kuwait founder, with a demonstration linking a guard pull to a sweep, a reversal from the bottom to the top position. It named Youssef Al Hamad and Mohammad Arti among the black belts he had taught. The IBJJF’s public certification registry lists him as Ahmad A. M. Alhouli, at second degree, with Gracie Barra Kuwait Academy (Kyokai). In his own July 2018 Al-Anba interview, Alhouli explained how he developed PFS while teaching American and British security personnel in Kuwait. Colleagues including Major Mark Atwood helped shape the curriculum. It combined BJJ, Japanese Tai Jutsu, boxing and wrestling, linking striking, throws, standing wrestling and ground control. He described its purpose through everyday self-defence situations, distinguishing that preparation from training for tournaments. His adaptation to civilian teaching included inviting European female instructors to run women’s courses in Kuwait three or four times annually. He also incorporated the ghutra and agal, the Gulf headcloth and the cord that holds it in place, because students wore them in daily life. By 2018 he reported having delivered courses in Britain, Spain, Sweden, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He said instruction should include ethical limits, with students learning to use their skills defensively.
