Abraham Tabar

Abraham Tabar teaches at Básico BJJ; his pupil Papo Soñé helped establish Cabarete’s Academia de la Costa.

Biography

Abraham Tabar teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Básico BJJ. DASH’s academy history also identifies him as Maestrón. His judo teacher was Mamoru Matsunaga. Born in 1963, Tabar taught judo at Escuela Matsunaga from 1995 to 2000, then BJJ and mixed martial arts at Escuela Vale-Tudo from 2000 to 2011. He also founded Básico BJJ. He studied groundwork in the United States with Romero Cavalcanti, Royce Gracie and Fernando Yamasaki, and taught Marte at Básico BJJ. By May 2010, Diario Libre described Tabar leading Yamasaki’s academy at Body Shop in Ensanche Naco. Marte was a full-time instructor there. In March 2025, El Día reported on Maetrón, released alongside the ninth anniversary of pupil Darío Soñé’s DASH academy. Producer Denis Lara and director/BJJ practitioner Beto Franco made the film. Franco praised Tabar’s influence beyond techniques; pupil Papo Soñé recalled discipline and fatherly guidance. Tomás “Papo” Soñé founded Academia de la Costa in Cabarete with Joe Neurauter in 2006. The academy places him in Tabar’s teaching line; Soñé’s later community projects offered children free BJJ, art and skateboarding. Tabar’s selection for the Dominican martial-arts Hall of Fame was announced in November 2025.
